My first solo exhibition, Ghost Coast, at Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco continues through June 19th. Thank you to all my friends who came out to join me at the opening - it was a delight to see so many of your lovely faces and I am so grateful for your kindness and support.
I am very happy to be headed back to San Francisco next week. The gallery will be hosting an artist walkthrough of the exhibition on Wednesday, June 4th, from 5 - 6pm. Berggruen Gallery is located at 10 Hawthorne Street, San Francisco.
It will be a casual chat and refreshments will be served. I’m looking forward to getting a chance to share more about the new work and spend time with those who couldn’t make the opening. I hope you will join us.
Here are some installation photographs of Ghost Coast at Berggruen Gallery taken by Shaun Roberts. John and the team at Berggruen are a dream to work with and create the friendliest, most welcoming space.
Open Studios in Portland Sat. May 31 & Sun. June 1
For those in Portland, my studio will be open on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st, from 10am to 4pm for our twice yearly open studios event. Read more about it at the NW Marine Art Works site.
Our historic building houses 70+ artists and artisans. We will have food and drink vendors and live music. It is always a fun, family-friendly community event.
Looking at, listening to, and reading
I re-read Anne Truitt’s Daybook last year, and ever the completionist, tore through Turn and am now onto Prospect, the third of her four published journals. Truitt is a wonderfully sensitive and insightful writer.
Listening to the breeze through my garden.
Looking at Ruth Asawa’s Retrospective at SFMOMA — WOW. My appreciation continues to grow for her life, work, teaching, and enormous contributions to her community. Asawa was a total powerhouse and an icon.
Thank you as always for reading. Stay tuned as I have another post planned next week about my Jarman Notes series, regeneration, and the ongoing influence of Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage on my life and work.
In gratitude—
Val
